Assembly - Anti Bullying Facts, Figures and the Impact of Bullying

(1)
The Anti Bullying assembly focuses upon key facts that have been taken from the 2016 Anti Bullying survey. It opens on a video that centers around cyber bullying and the impact that this can have. It them moves onto key facts taken from the survey that will be quite shocking such as 50% of students said that they had been bullied at some point during their school life and also that 19% of the 8550 students who took the survey are bullied on several occasions during a school week. The assembly then focuses on what we can do as a community to challenge bullying and finishes with a recent advert anti bullying advert that uses a rock, paper and scissors fort where the scissors protects the paper, the paper protects the rock and the rock protects the scissors. This advert recently won an Oscar and is very powerful.

Assembly - Don't Judge a Book By it's Cover

This assembly has two clear sections. The first is a link to Susan Boyle's audition for Britain's Got Talent. A picture is shown of Susan and I ask the group firstly who she is and then does she look like a pop star? I then use the link to show her audition. During the audition Ant and Dec say 'I bet you weren't expecting that'. When the audition finishes I ask the group why weren't you expecting her to not have an amazing voice? The second section of the audition requires some preparation. You need four bags of walker crisps. You have to carefully open each bag at the bottom and swap the flavours into different bags. I normally put ready salted into a cheese and onion bag and then salt and vinegar in prawn cocktail. You then selotape the two bags you will use in the assembly up so that they look like have been unopened. I then ask for a volunteer and blindfold them whilst doing a blind taste. When the volunteer say, what appears, to be the wrong flavours I then reveal what I have done. My message from both sections of the assembly is to not always follow the crowd. Sometimes other people's opinions are not always yours. Never read a book by its over until you have explored it for yourself.

Assembly - Perseverance, Never Give Up

(1)
The focus of this assembly is about perseverance. The first clip is taken from the film 'Catch me if you can'. It takes a scene where someone describes two mice falling into a bucket of milk. Once drowns but the other tries so hard to get out that it churns the milk into butter and walks out the bucket. The next clip is taken from 'Educating Yorkshire'. It shows a young man with a speech impediment trying to talk through some work and getting frustrated. The next clip is one of him speaking in the Year 11 leavers assembly. The next section shows Andy Murray getting upset after losing the Wimbledon final followed by the moment he won Wimbledon the following year. I then go on to talk about how in these situations both people went on to be successful by not giving up and persevering with the challenges ahead of them. This then links in to the challenges that the students will face this academic year. The assembly finishes with a quote by Gary Player who once said “It's funny but the more I practice, the luckier I get.”

Assembly - Find Out What Is Your Motivation, Use It, Benefit From It

(1)
The assembly is centred around students finding a way to motivate them self and tapping into this to work hard in school. The first section of the video is a short funny video about a student who procrastinates for an entire day, making excuses to do silly tasks so that he does not have to revise. My starter here is that I believe that some of the students in my house are very similar when it comes to their won work or revision. I then define motivation and talk about some of the challenges that students will face shortly that will require motivation to succeed. Examples include their exams, finding a job, their driving test etc. The next section of the assembly is another short video that takes clips from movies with inspirational quotes. Threaded throughout this video are extracts from a motivational American speaker called Eric Thomas. He was once homeless but is now a multi millionaire. I have taken my faviourite quotes from this short video that I can relate too and I believe that the students will as well such as this: ‘I don’t do well in math, your right. You ain’t never studied. I’m not good at writing, because you have never written before. Most of you won’t be successful because when you’re studying and you get tired, you quit. (Eric Thomas - How Bad Do You Want It, 2013) I end the assembly by saying that I often listen to Eric Thomas because when I do it makes me feel inspired and motivates me. The task I then set my House is to think about what motivates them individually and use that the next time they feel like procrastinating for a day to avoid school work.

Confidence Thermometer - Progress Checker

(0)
I use this document as a progress checker during lessons and have this laminated and blown up into A1 size in my classroom to use. As the beginning of the lesson when I go explain the learning objectives of the lesson I ask students to write their names on a post it note and then stick their name on the thermometer depending on how confident they feel against the topic. During the lesson I then ask students to move their names if they feel they have made progress against the learning objectives. This is a brilliant tool to demonstrate progress as it is visual and can be visited at any pint during a lesson.

Assembly - Anti-Bullying, Think Before You Post

(0)
This assembly focusses on anti-bullying but more specifically cyber bullying. The opening part of the assembly defines bullying and also explains the different types of bullying providing examples of each in schools. These are verbal, social and physical bullying. The next section of the assembly uses a video called 'In Real Life' which is a social experiment that shows what happens when online bullying is taken offline. This is a very cutting video where people say some quite horrific to people in the public. The things that the people are saying are quotes taken from other people's social media. The moral of the video is that a lot of people say things online that they would never dream to say to someone face to face. This is followed by some key facts and figures about cyber bullying and then some general tips with the tag Think Before YOU Post. The final section of this assembly shows how students can report bullying at my school. This will need to be amended for each individual school.

Assembly - Can We Rely On Being Lucky To Be Successful?

(0)
This assembly focuses on the prospect of relying in the lottery, lucky charms or Mystic Meg to predict our future and rely on to be a success. The first part of the assembly is a clip of a euro lottery draw. I ask the staff to fill out their numbers before the assembly with slips for the euro draw. The staff will not win the lottery (hopefully!). I then move on to the use of lucky charms and then onto star signs and Mystic Meg by reading out staff star signs. The key message is that we cannot rely on luck or anything else apart from our own hard work.

Assembly - Anti-Bullying - I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' Theme

(0)
This assembly focuses on the issue of bullying in schools. I used the situation taken from I'm a celebrity Ge Me Out Of Here last year when Jimmy Bullard made a series of nasty comments towards his 'friend' Jake Quickenden. The theme is based around the question 'is banter actually a form of bullying?' The opening part of this assembly requires a banana and a roll of selotape. I open then banana and ask someone to selotape it back together. The intial message is once you have done or said something to someone, you can try to fix it or put it right but often, that relationship may never be the same. Just like the selotaped banana!

Assembly - Positive Thinking - Growth and Fixed Mindset

(0)
The assembly is based around a fixed and growth mind set. It uses a series of clips taken from I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here from a couple of years ago when Helen Flannigan was voted to do a number of Bush Tucker Trails. The first two clips show here saying that 'she isn't feeling this today' and then quits before really having a go. The next clip shows here saying that she is going 'to give it her very best' and she completes the trial gaining all of the stars. The message is about approaching a task with a positive mindset. I then list the challenges that each Key Stage will face during the academic year and the importance of being positive and giving everything 100% effort.

Assembly - Mental Health Awareness, Facts, Tips and Support

(0)
This assembly is centred around mental health awareness and I used this during the national childrens' mental health awareness week. I open the assembly with a definition of mental health and the #timetotalk which I explain is the key message of the assembly. I also show a gif which says 'mental health is real, even if you cannot see it' and use the example of being able to see someone is is physically injured for instance on crutches however, you cannot see a mental health illness or injury. The next section of the assembly is a short video about talking about mental health and how this is no longer a taboo subject and is something that as a school community we are aware of and support. The next section of the assembly identifies that there are over 200 forms of mental health illness and I use three quiz questions to show how big of an issue this is nationally. The final section of the assembly contains a number of helpful tips to maintain good mental health. I then finish the assembly with the national statistic that 'Nearly three in four young people fear the reactions of friends when they talk about their mental health problems'. I conclude by saying that as a school and house community we are here to support each other and that mental health is not a taboo subject and one which we accept.

Assembly - Anti Bullying , Cyber Bullying Focus

(0)
This assembly has a focus on cyber bullying. The assembly opens with a short clip showing a boy talking to a girl in a chat room. He is being told to say nasty things to her by her friends. The clip ends with the boy telling the girl that they would be better off if she was dead and asks the question 'how would you feel?' Cyber bullying is a huge issue in schools and this assembly then focuses upon the different types of cyber bullying that can take place and their impact on people.

Assembly - Make School A Level Playing Field By Bringing The Correct Equipment

(0)
The assembly requires some preparation but is well worth it. You will need to set out a table tennis table at the front of the assembly hall. On each side of the table to you need to place two school bags. Once has a table tennis paddle and a ball in it and the other half has a rounders bat in it. Once the assembly has started I ask for a student and a member of staff to volunteer. I give the student the bag with the table tennis paddle and ball in it and the bag containing the rounders bat to the member of staff. I normally ask a sporty student before the assembly if I can use them so the demonstration works. I then ask the volunteers to reveal the equipment that is in their bags and have a game of first to 5. The student will win with the correct equipment. I then show students a picture of a 'level playing field' and say that there are some people in the group who, at times, create a situation where they are not able to learn as well as their peers. This is due to their poor organisation bu not bringing basic equipment or not doing their homework. I finish the assembly with the key message that in later life being organised is a key skill to get a job.

Assembly - Create Your Own Luck, Star Signs & Euro Lottery

(0)
The assembly is centered around students not relying on lady luck and creating their own futures. The first section of the assembly is a euro millions draw. I have attached an amended lottery ticket that can be used for this. I either give each student a ticket or each member of staff. Once the draw has finsihed (hopefully) no one should have won the jackpot. I then go on to say that we cannot therefore on the lottery in the future. The next section is a number of star signs that I have taken from Mystic Meg. I enter in staff names at the top of each page and predict their futures. This normally gets a good laugh from the students and I finish on the point that these things are really unlikely and simply guesswork. The assembly finished with a summary about lucky charms that people may use but actually. Luck is something you create through hard work.

Assembly - Celebrity Juice, Chinese Whispers and Gossip in Schools

(0)
This assembly is based around the rumour mill that exists in schools. The first part of the assembly is an imitation of a game on celebrity juice. It requires 3 members of staff to be stood in line with ear phones in and their music on full volume. Behind the staff are three extracts from celeb gossip mags. The idea is for you to read out one piece of gossip and then for the staff to pass this down the line. The message will get lost through the loud music and lip reading. This is repeated 3 times. I then show a picture of a puppeteer and explain how people can twist information to create a situation for their own benefit and that unless a person has heard or seen something for them self to not always believe it.

Assembly - The Lance Armstrong Story - Persevere and Do Not Cheat Yourself

(0)
The assembly is based on the story of Lance Armstrong. The first section shows a picture of Lance Armstrong and asks the question who is and why is he famous? The next clip shows a short video about the rise and fall of Lance Armstrong. The key facts about his careers and then his demise. I then talk through the timeline of his famous rise and fall. The next is a trailer of the famous documentary that was taken throughout his career where he admits lying to the public and covering up his performance enhancement use. The final clip is a Nike advert that stars lance Armstrong. In this advert he says 'people often ask me what I am on, what am I on? My bike 6 hours a day, what are you on?' I then go on to relate the Armstrong Lie to school. How Lance Armstrong knew he was cheating but created a cover story to make him look like he was working 6 hours a day to achieve his goals and not cutting corners by cheating. The assembly then finishes by asking students to not be a Lance Armstrong. To not tell parents, staff, friends that they are working hard/revising if they are not really. To be honest so that people are aware if they need support and can put that in place. I finish by asking the group to pereservere with their challenges but asking for help is not a weakness. It is actually a huge strength.

Assembly - Wear Sunscreen, Listen To The Advice That Is Offered To You

(0)
This is a really fun assembly that students love. The start of the assembly shows the cover of the song "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)“ by Baz Luhrman. I explain to the group that this song made number 1 in 1999 and was one of my favourite songs whilst at school. The whole song is centred around someone giving life advice. I then play the song and show a picture that details of the advice given in the song. I then move onto the next part of the assembly. This requires some preparation. You need to ask staff to send pictures of themself from their school years and insert this into the presentation. I then show pictures of member of staff and ask the students who they think it is. This normally gets a great laugh. Once I have been through all of the pictures my message is that as staff we often give lots of advice and sometimes students feel that we are nagging or getting at them. The message is that as staff, we have all made the mistakes that you are going to make so use us and trust us when we offer advice.

Assembly - Teamwork and Expectations of a New Academic Year

(0)
I often use this assembly for the first assembly of the new academic year. In the first section of the assembly I talk about how this is the 'first day a new journey'. How students can remodel them self if they would like to this year of continue the good work from the previous year or years. I then talk about the basic expectations of the year. Uniform expectations, behavioral expectations and such like. The final section of the assembly is a practical that students really love but takes some preparation. One a table at the front of the assembly hall I sit a bowl of sweets on a table. I also selotape a spoon to a meter long ruler to create a meter long spoon! You will need two of these. I ask for two volunteers to come out and hand them a meter long spoon each. I tell the volunteers that they have 1 minute to eat as many sweets as possible however, there is one condition. They can only hold the meter long spoon by then end. The only way that they will be able to eat the sweets is to feed each other. Once the demonstration is done I talk to the year group about how this is an example of being a team and that at school we have to help each other to make sure we succeed. I use the acronym to finish the assembly: T - together E - everyone A - acheives M - more
British Values - Mutual Respect and Tolerance

British Values - Mutual Respect and Tolerance

(0)
This assembly focuses on one of the British Values with regards to Mutual Respect and Tolerance. The first slide is a definition of respect “A regard for the feelings, wishes, or rights of others”. The next slide asks the students to compare and contrast the sports football and rugby with regards to the respect shown by both the players and spectators. This should spark debate about the respect and possible lack of respect shown in each. The following slides show footballers abusing referees and and then an article detailing how many referees are leaving football due to the abuse that they take. A short video of a rugby referee then follows this which demonstrates how rugby players generally show great respect for the referee as he tells off 30 men who were not following the rules without any of them questioning him in any way. The next two slides show a recent Manchester football derby where the police had to create a line to keep the fans away from each other. The next slide shows two rugby fans stood together at a game shouting on their teams. This is the hook into the theme of mutual respect because why does rugby seem to have a culture of respect whilst football does not? I then explain that when people show each other respect this makes for a happier experience for all people involved. I then ask the students how can we show respect for each other at our school and within our house to make it a nice place to be? I have broken this up into respecting yourself, respecting the environment and then others. Whilst talking about respecting others I then introduce the term mutual respect and explain why this is important. This leads into discussion about that fact that in Britian we live in a diverse nation made up of many different cultures, languages, races, and backgrounds and how we can learn from others. I then finish the assembly with a golden rule about mutual respect: Treat others as you want to be treated

Expectations for the New Academic Year, First Assembly

(0)
I have used this assembly recently as the first assembly of the new academic year for my house. I start the assembly by talking through how this time of year is a great time to reflect on the past year and to decide what needs to change or be kept the same to be successful for the new academic year. I then show a definition of 'expectations' and that this is a strong belief that something will happen. I explain that I have a number of basic expectations for the house to ensure that we are successful on both an individual and house basis. This then leads into expectations of uniform, behaviour, using a planner, being organised, not littering etc with pictures for each topic. I then talk through what the house can expect from staff and the what I expect from them and that there will be no passengers this year with everyone contributing. The section of the assembly is a trailer from a film called the yes man. I play this until half way through to the point where Jim Carey go to a conference and is told that he must so yes to every opportunity given to him. This then links into all the challenges/key school events that I have taken from the school calendar and I ask the group to not see these as negatives but to see these as opportunities to improve and achieve. I finish the assembly by saying the success of failure of this year will be the students' attitude towards these challenges and that as a team supporting each other it is going to be a very exciting and successful year for the house.

The focus of this assembly is about perseverance. The first clip is taken from the film 'Catch me if you can'. It takes a scene where someone describes two mice falling into a bucket of milk. It shows a young man with a speech impediment trying to talk through some work and getting frustrated. The next clip is one of him speaking in the Year 11 leavers assembly.
